Comma before "thanks"?

Do I need to put a comma before "thanks" in the following?

"I was able to afford a car thanks to him."

I may be wrong, but I don't think so. I think you shouldn't put it there. However, you should put if you put the last clause in the beginning. Like this: "Thanks to him, I was able to afford a car".

It's a technical comma, and it is not optional. The sentence is like "I was able to climb the mountain, praise be."
