Comma before independent clause

Am I right in thinking that there should be a comma before "as" here as it is followed by an independent clause?

In spite of this, I knew that I could not do it for long without getting caught, as there were only four French horn players in the orchestra.

Anonymous there should be a comma before "as" here as it is followed by an independent clause? 'As' is a subordinating conjunction (= 'because'), so it is not an independent clause. That particular comma before 'as' is often a bone of contention, however, as there is usually argument as to whether its clause is restrictive or non-restrictive.
