Comma Before And?

I am not sure if there are two independent clauses in the sentence. Do I need a comma before the 'and' ?
Thank you very much for your help.

Even if a plant’s leaves do not taste bitter, it is not in the plant’s best interest to be eaten, and there may be toxins in the plant’s leaves.

It seems fine to me with and without a comma. And is a co-ordinating conjunction and you don't relly need a comma before it in the sentence unless you want the reader to pause and thus make the last clause slightly more emphatic. CB
