Comma and use of 'that'

He told her when she arrived that he had always thought music therapy was sentimental and superficial but that her papers were "entirely different."

OR:

He told her when she arrived that he had always thought music therapy was sentimental and superficial, but her papers were “entirely different.”

Comma after 'superficial'?
