Comma and Colon

How to do I know when to use a colon or a comma? What else can a colon do besides introducing a list?
Which one is correct?

He walked away: offended.
or
He walked away, offended.

I think it might help if I add that the colon is comparatively rare. If you are tempted to use one in "He walked away, offended", you are far too eager. Use colons sparingly in any event. They are noisy, and they look technical.
