I wanted to do something special for a couple of gifts given this year, so I decided to make something.
OR.....

OR.....
No commas in the sentence at all?

No; on the contrary, it is quite necessary. The gifts are from others, not the speaker.

Then why is he wanting to do something special, by making something himself/herself? Would the gift not be the speakers? Baffled!

Well, me, too. I was thinking that the OP was making gifts in return ('for' = 'in return for'), but now I see that your view is the more logical one. So the sentences should really be overhauled:
