comma after conjunction

When you have two independent clauses joined by a conjunction which is followed by a prepositional phrase, do you put a comma after the conjunction and after the prepositional phrase, or do you just put the comma before the conjunction and after the prepositional phrase?

Top answer

The punctuation depends on the length, structure and intended meaning of the individual sentence. Sometimes no commas are necessary. eg The phone rang and after five seconds I picked it up.
