Comma after "center"

As through the portal's center brave Lancelot and his men traversed, they warily gazed at the other side of the world.

Do I need a comma after "center"?

Thanks.

What if i was to add an adjective after portal's? To me it sounds like there might need to be a slight pause, but still unsure.

As through the portal's august center brave Lancelot and his men traversed, they warily gazed at the other side of the world.

It's a judgement call.
As you make the phrase longer and longer, a comma becomes more desirable.
