Comma?

Hi everyone,

"So furious he was he started the war himself, much to the relief of Charles who once again could cast himself as the champion defender of the Catholic belief."

Could anyone please comment on whether a comma is in order in-between "was he" in the above sentence?

It's such unusual wording that I'd say that something is needed to facilitate readability.

However, I'd prefer the following.
