Could anyone please comment on whether a comma is in order in-between "was he" in the above sentence?

Could anyone please comment on whether a comma is in order in-between " was he" in the above sentence? It's such unusual wording that I'd say that something is needed to facilitate readability. However, I'd prefer the following.
