Comma?

Should I get rid of the comma after 'slaughter'?
Kharas could no longer take part in such mindless, hateful slaughter, and abandoned the field, bearing the bodies of Duncan’s sons with him.

It's okay there even though there's no change of subject. It helps because of the comma between the two adjectives. and then abandoned (no comma needed).

It's okay there even though there's no change of subject. It helps because of the comma between the two adjectives. Or, (better?) you could add "..and then abandoned (no comma needed).
