Here's an excerpt from a novel I've been reading: Our platoon is scheduled to deploy at the end of the month! That's only if the battle of Saigon doesn't begin sooner than estimated. Comma or period better?

Isn't it one train of thought? Like (sentence A) will happen unless (sentence B) happens ahead of schedule. It's like if you say it in your mind, the two sentences seem to be one complete thought/process. Am I wrong?

You are wrong in confusing thought with grammar. A comma-splice error is a sentence construction error.
