Your second example should be

As a project participant, I was responsible for....(unless he was the sole participant)

People disagree, and you have to use your own judgment. If the introductory phrase is short, you can omit the comma. I err on the side of more commas. The comma doesn't hurt anything, it is merely conventional and mechanical, and it usually aids the reader. I would use it in your two examples.
