Comma

I was so careless that the other day/recently, I caught a cold.

I was so careless and, therefore, I caught a cold.

Are those commas above necessary?

I was so careless that the other day/recently , I caught a cold. -- I wouldn't use a comma here. I'm not sure if you are intentionally using "careless" correctly.

  • I was so careless that the other day/recently , I caught a cold.

  • I guess it is possible to catch a cold through carelessness (not taking proper care of oneself), but often it "just happens" and is nobody's fault.

OH, sorry, MM. I meant to delete 'so' in the second example.

But in this sentence, you would, wouldn't you?

I find these sentences acceptable with or without a comma.

OK.
Mr Wordythen the overall flow is not good and the statements appear to be contradictory.

The first sentence makes no difference to the appropriateness of "careless".
Could you tell me why it's contradictory?

I was careless and therefore I caught a cold appears to be talking about the same time period as I didn't have any cold last year. Therefore it seems to be saying both that last year you didn't have a cold and yet at the same time you did have a cold. If the second sentence is talking ab

Now I see why it seemed contradictory to you. As you may have noticed, I forgot to add 'recently' or

TakaI didn't have any cold last year and I didn't think I would have any. I didn't look for myself properly, and therefore the other day/recently I caught a cold.

it would work, right?
No. "I didn't look after myself properly" (note "after", not "for") still reads as if it's talking about last year, which doesn't make sense. The phrase that se

I don't know what got into me. Of course, it's 'look after', not 'look for'. That mistake is so embarrassing. If possible, could you edit it for me?

OK. Or this one might work, although it doesn't have 'this year' in it as you suggested, right?

Sorry, I don't have the ability to do that. I really wouldn't worry about it.

Mr Wordy "Recently I didn't look after myself properly" sounds like it's referring to a single incident rather than an ongoing situation as one might expect. It would be more usual to say "I haven't been looking after myself" or "I wasn't looking after myself".
Then should I delete 'recently' here?
