"Coming near" vs "getting near"...

Do they have the same use if I am talking about an event that will almost certainly happen in the future and the time is approaching. Something like: The apocalypse is getting near/coming near?

Thanks.

Forgot to say that it has to contain "near" not the other variety "close". Thanks.
