comic appropriation by high art

What does "comic appropriation by high art" mean?

This show, curated by John Carlin, was hugely successful and, despite the smallish venue, gave ample room for original drawings by 25 early comic artists like Outcault and Dirks, shown alongside paintings and prints of such gallery artists as Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Stuart Davis, and Peter Saul. Carlin addressed the issue of comic appropriation by high art by redirecting the debate to say this show is ‘‘art about art.’’

Hi To appropriate something is to take it as if it were your own: to steal it Some art shamelessly takes it's ideas from comics - that is comic appropriation. The ideas, the technique, the genre, the style - if that is used by more formal artists, it is comic appropriation. There's nothing wrong with that, of course Dave
