comes before something or somebone

what is the word that means to come before something/someone. I only remember it starts with "pro" or "pre" like proceed? Just to add more information, I remember the opposite (antonym) of the word related to it is "successor" which means someone that comes after another, or something like that. I hope I'm making sense. thank you very much
