Come up with

Sharon: Why did you cancel?

Mark considers this, but doesn't come up with an answer.

Is doesn't come up with an answer OK if Mark doesn't know the exact reason why he canceled or just won't give it? (in my story Mark is falling into a depression but doesn't know it, so he doesn't know what's going on with him at this moment) Or would it sound like he tries to make up something eg. a lie about why he canceled?
