Come unstuck

"Contradictions accumulate until the Capitalist system itself comes unstuck."

Is this usage of 'come unstuck' informal?

My dictionary lists this usage as 'informal' but then my own feeling is that the phrase is used rarely enough these days that it has come to sound a touch quaint, even elegant.

Thank you.

Would you advise against using the word in formal writing? Is it so informal as to be colloquial?

Thank you.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it was colloquial, but I'd stick to 'fail' 'encounters real difficulties', or some other appropriate word, in formal writing.
