come home and get home?

One of my Australian friends taught me the difference between "come back" and "get back." According to him, I should use "come back" when somebody else is at home, so in the following sentence, I should use "get back." I found the front door open when I got home. Does this rule appy to British and American English?

In I found the front door open when I came home, it is irrelevant whether thre was anybody else at home at the time.
The speaker is probably at home when they utter these words to somebody who may or may not have been at home at the time of the speaker's return.
