Come back to class

Can you help me to express the following sentences naturally in English? Many thanks in advance.

(Teacher to student)

Tom, can you pleae ask you classmates( who are talking in the hallway) to come back to their seats ? The class will start in a minute. The class was supposed to start 5 minutes ago.

Top answer

It depends on the preference of the teacher, but I don't think I have ever heard 'classmates' used. If the teacher thinks the students are Tom's friends then he'll say 'friends' instead, if not, then "those students" is common I think. Also, "The class will start any minute" and "The class was suppose to start 5 minutes ago" contradict each other.

  • Possible suggestions: "Tom, can you please ask 'your friends' / 'those students' to come back to their seats?
