Come back at

Hello,

Is it ok, if in a situation the guy was hit by a car. And suddenly he found out that the woman behind the wheel was his girlfriend. So he says: " Honey, I can't come back at you because I love you". This phrasal verb will be appropriate in this contest?

Thanks!

Yes, take revenge. The guy was hit by a car. He found out that it was his girlfriend who run into him accidentelly. He would come back at someone if it wouldn't be his girlfriend by taking the 'offender' to court, but it was his girlfriend, so he couldn't came back at her.

Thank you

I don't use "come back at" that way.

Let's home someone who does use it can tell us which dialect of English it's used in, if it's used at all.

(Your example is an odd one to me. You don't "take revenge" on someone who accidentally hits you. They have insurance. It's handled that way. It's not an act of vengence to expect to receive compensation for your medical bills.)
