He stopped there and thought to have some rest until the tortoise come along.

Is the sentence grammatically correct and natural?

On a related note, speakers of North American English don't seem to use this word. Confusingly, they say turtle instead.

You can mix tenses with a direct quote:

The hare stopped there and thought to himself, "I'll have some rest until the tortoise comes along."

Converting to indirect speech:

The hare stopped there and thought that he would take some rest until the tortoise came along."
