Combining sentences with and

I have a staff member that constantly uses "and" to combine sentences that have nothing to do with one another. My thoughts are that the combined sentences should be related but what is the true correct answer to that.

Ex. Mr. Jones indicated that he has worked at the building for 2 years and has recently taken a trip to Florida. During his trip he.....

Is this improper to join the sentence re working in the building and the trip in the same sentence?

I would hope so! And that's true not just of sentences, but of any constituents joined by and.

What a mess communcation would be if we didn't follow that principle. We would say things like:

She left in a Cadillac and a bad mood.
