Combining sentences

I am trying to combine the following sentences using conjunction and I wonder if the conjunctions sound ok.

(original sentence) Tony skimmed through the help-wanted ads. Nothing was there for him. He desparately needed a job. He would have to sell his car. He could no longer keep up the payments.

1) Even though Tony skimmed throught the help-wanted ads, nothing was there for him. He despartely needed a job because he would have to seel his car if he could no longer keep up the payments.
2) Tony skimmed through the help-wanted ads, but (or and) nothing was there for him. He despartely needed a job. Otherwise, he would have to sell his car because he could no longer keep up the payments
