Combining past and present in the same sentence

Dear all,

I'm in need of guidance on how to correctly conjugate the following sentences by using appropriate tenses:

"In our days, it is common that some courses are conducted online. Technical malfunction are common as well, and a student reported that due to malfunction in the course website, there was no option to communicate with the lecturer."

If we convert the sentences through the different possible verb forms, we will get many different versions of each sentence.
