Colon/semi-colon usage.

Critics have compared the film with (title) another time-altering science fiction (title): the similarity of plotline in the protagonist's determination to change the past was highlighted.

The story centres on a secret agent investigating an attack on the government; the attack is part of a plot by a former spy to discredit the government.

Are these usages between the colon and the semi-colon pretty much the same. They're both from Wikipedia.

The only difference I can see is the colon seems to relate to add extra information on a the same idea as the first sentence, as where the semi-colon is a new but related sentence. But this is semantics.
