Colons and listing (full sentences)

Could you comment on the following and please let me know what you think of the use of the colon?

There are many differences between me and my best friend. For example, I'm a very strict person: I like to plan my day by making a to-do list, I always respect my due dates and when I was studying I couldn't cheat on my exams.

Also, would it be correct to say that the commas should be replaced by periods?

Thanks kindly.

No. That's not necessary. In fact, I'd put a comma after 'due dates'.
