Are the colonial robes our judges wear really redundant? Judging by this theft on Wednesday morning, they're still as valuable as designer labels. City civil Judge V G Dhande filed a complaint with the L T Marg police station that his gown, the one he wears while hearing matters, was missing from his court resting room along with Rs 2,000 and a lock.
Dhande realised his cupboard was broken into when he went in for work on Wednes day morning. According to the police, the theft must have taken place on Tuesday after court hours.
"We were informed about the incident at about 10.25 am and we did a panchnama immediately," said police inspector, Nitin Shinde from the LT Marg police station. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered in the matter. The complaint was lodged by court watchman Ram Pashuram Satpute.
Police said it was investigating who visited court number 39 and the resting room after the judge left the premises on Tuesday.
In October-November 2006, there were two instances of a thief entering the courtrooms of two sessions court judges who were handling the sensitive Pravin Mahajan murder case and a shoot-out respectively. The thief had tried to steal some documents or material related to the case. Then too, the coat of one of the judges had gone missing.
