Colon Usage

Colon Usage. I’ve noticed that many book, including grammar book, place a colon after a single word and then provided an explanation for that word. For example,
“NOTE: With lists, you may use periods after numbers and letters instead of parentheses.”

This kind of usage is very common but I cannot find a rule that allow it.
