Colon, semi-colon, dash?

Hi
I've done extensive research on this topic, but still cannot decide whether the dash should be a semi colon or a colon instead. I am trying to illustrate the meaning of 'autonomy' in context.

The man is able to make rational decisions and displays full mental capacity - he is autonomous. If he were mentally disabled, he would not be fully autonomous.

Thank you

I'd use a full stop/period and start a new sentence. A dash or semicolon would be OK too — not a colon.
