Colon before "this" ?

I was wondering if it is correct to use a colon in the following sentence. "Jane's obsession with cleaning shows the underlying tension within her character : This further emphasizes her instability and discomfort during social situations".

I wouldn't. Also, the space before the colon is a style that I would not personally consider correct in ordinary modern English, and the capital after the colon is debatable style too, though not always wrong, in my opinion.
