Colon at end of introductory paragraph?

the first paragraph gives a factual, present-tense, background introduction to the next paragraph, which is a short, past-tense, narrative. I am getting a strong impulse (my grammar is based on instinct) to use a colon at the end of the first paragraph.

"I am a volunteer and group leader at Blah ...come to know one child, Bleh, very well:
'Hey give it back!' I heard someone whining in the next room. I went to see..."

So is this bad? Originally all the stuff in the first paragraph was mixed up inside the second, but I extracted it
i imagine it kinda like factoring 4x + 16 = 4(x +4)
where 4 is the first paragraph

anyway I'm rambling, should I use the colon or just stick with a period?

It seems bad, since the text following the colon seems to spill on into the next sentence. Forget it.
