Colon and Semicolon

I have a question about the sentence which contains colon or semicolon. When I make a sentence with colon or semicolon, should I write a small letter after them? Or, is it okay to write a capital letter? I heard there are several cases to write a capital letter but I don't remember specific cases.
Is anybody here to tell me about this?

  • Sidebar comment: the colon and the em dash are the two most sorely underused yet highly useful punctuation marks in English.
