colon?

What is the correct way to ask these questions? With a question mark, or colon, or other, after the words statement and below?

"Why did a Dean at Cambridge University, make the following statement?

“Somehow, everybody just knows that Christianity is the Church and the Church is a power-structure, an apparatus for limiting freedom in belief and morals.”

And why did a Professor at Oxford University say the below?

“Christianity is morally outrageous and intellectually contemptible.”

Thank you.

The punctuation is OK, but the format is awkward. I suggest: Why did a Dean at Cambridge University say, “Somehow, everybody just knows that Christianity is the Church and the Church is a power-structure, an apparatus for limiting freedom in belief and morals ”? And why did a Professor at Oxford University say, “Christianity is morally outrageous and intellectually contemptible ”?
