Collocations with 'exam'

I gave an online test and there was this sentence: "Next month he has to __ an exam in International Law." I typed "give" but the correct answer was "do". It also said that we can also say sit an exam, pass an exam and fail an exam. Are these the only collocations possible with exam since I've also heard people say, "Sit for an exam".

Thanks in advance.

So give an exam is completely wrong? Also is it wrong to say sit for an exam?

No. Professors give exams. Students take exams.

That is more British English than American English. Americans would understand you, but they would not use it themselves, unless they were of a British tradition.

It can be used on anything that there is some actual test for.
It means if he takes the test, he will make a good (high) score.

Emotions are notoriously difficult to test for, but not totally out of the questio
