Would you say that these collocations do not work at all?

The book was slightly interesting.
Not wishing to miss the golden chance, Franc decided to... or Well, it's my golden chance.

No, I wouldn't say that the first does not work at all, though perhaps in polished English another word would be chosen, e.g. "moderately interesting".

"golden opportunity" is the usual expression.
