College Essay

Cheerleading has been a major aspect of my life since I was five. Throughout middle school and high school I have participated in many extra curricular activities, both in school and my community. As one of the activities that has had the strongest influence on me, being a Cheerleader, has taught me the values of responsibility, learderhsip, team mwork, self-discipline, the importance of working as a team, and time management. Being a member of my high school cheerleading team also requires strong dedication, as well as a positive attitude and representing my school in a positive and respectful way.Cheerleading consists of five components: stunting, tumbling, dancing, jumping, and cheering. Thse who participate must build up endurance, strength, and coordination in order to they attempt these skills at a high school level as well as mentally overcome the risk of injury. Acquiring the skills necessary to become a successful cheerleader can take many years of private lessons, late pratices and running routines non-stop. Although it is a lot of work and some times draining, the satisfaction and pride felt in the team efforts when rewarded at a competition makes all the hard work well worth the effort.In general, most high school sports seasons last about two to three months. Being that cheerleaders must first fulfill their responsibility of cheering for both football and basketball games and must also compete at their own events causes the season to last as long as ten months. As a result most of my daily life is spent amoungst my teammates which aids in the formation of a close bond and a high level of trust; we've become more of a family rather then just a team. A routine would not be successful without each and everyone of the team memembers working to achieve their fullest potential for the upcoming competition season.Trying to manage a busy schedule can be extremely overwhelming without the use of proper time management. Organization, having a positive attitude and being driven to meet all responsibilities and expectations are necessary when one is placed with the task of managing a demanding schedule. Being a student athlete, and a active member of my class along with outside activities and school clubs has taught me how vital proper time management truly is to become successful. Simply by participating in a sport which I am passionate about, I’ve learned many life skills, I believe these skills have bettered me as an individual and will be extremely useful in my future.
