Collective subject-verb agreement

I am confused as to which is the proper verb for the following sentence:

The working class are often criticized.

The working class is often criticized.

I think, but I am not sure, the aforementioned is an issue of collective subject - verb agreement.

Many kind thanks to anyone who can answer my question and provide insight into this grammar area.
