Collective Nouns

Okay so I am currently revising for my A-Level English Language exam and I've come across a problem.

I am a little confused regarding whether collective nouns cover nouns that refer to groups of objects, such as a collection, e.g. My collection of china plates. Or if they only refer to groups of living things.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

A suffering English student
