cats - no idea and I can't imagine when you'd ever need a word for this...

Horses/ponies - in British English it is a 'herd'. 'string' is used only for a group of horses used in a sport that are owned or trained or ridden specifically by one person/stable. For example all the racehorses trained by one specific trainer/stable, or all the polo ponies owned by one owner.
