Cold turkey

Dear teachers,

Can you help me understand? What is the common meaning of cold turkey? Can I use it only for bad habits? (smoking, drinking etc.)

Please correct my sentences.

I stopped smoking cold turkey.
When I had realized that drinking to much alcohol was killing me, I wanted to go cold turkey right there and then.

Thanks...
