Cold comfort

I know what the expression "cold comfort" means, but should it be used with an article?

For example:

It is (a) cold comfort to know that he betrayed other people too.

The word comfort can be both countable and uncountable (mostly uncountable), and I think that in this case, the two meanings overlap (or at least the word can be interpreted either way). The version with the article is possibly more emphatic than the version without it but basically they convey the same message.
