Vocabulary

Coherent + cogent

Hello,

Opine please, may a text be described as both coherent and cogent?

As I understand, coherent has quite a broad range of meanings, and it

may particularly denote something close to cogency.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Mr Micawber,

Thanks for your comments.

Do you mean that "opine" is uncommon nowadays or completely

obsolete? I have not find a single dictionary that marks it as out-
of-use. I cannot say that I uncounter this word on the Net regularly,

but Google produces about 4mln entries containing it.

It sounds pompous. I used it when I was a college student.

Does it matter of it sounds pompous? Especially if it gets the point across in a concise, clear manner?

Yes; that means that it is out of register. In the proper context, it is a fine word.
