coherence in sentences?

Question

what does coherent really mean? i read up on it and i sorta want to get more in depth with it so if anyone can help that would be great. but first off what do they mean by using repetition of key words ,synonyms , pronouns,transitions,and sentence patterns

Who do you mean by 'they'?  'Coherently' may just mean 'understandably'.

As I understand, coherence refers to consistency of style in a sequence of sentences in a paragraph or essay.. But you can have incoherence in a single sentence. For example, in this sentence both second person and third person pronouns are used to refer to one person, and in the next sentence, the person shifts again to first person plural.

You should always pay attention to where one is going in life. We need to plan ahead for the future. (not coherent)

Better:
You should always pay attention to where you are going in life. You need to plan ahead for the future.
One should always pay attention to where one is going in life. One needs to plan ahead for the future.

If a paragraph has incoherent sentences, it sounds very awkward. The reader will be confused or unhappy reading it..
Good writing requires a lot of effort in making the sentences flow smoothly.

Repetition can be very boring. Mixing tenses isn't good either:

John was a quick boy. He learned very quickly and he would always be quick to finish and get up quickly to do something new..

Better (using synonyms):
John was a quick boy. He learned his lessons rapidly and was faster than anyone else to finish his work. He was eager to get up and do something new.

No, not necessarily.
However, a good essay, newspaper article academic thesis or story always has a theme, and the sentences are organized into paragraphs which develop the story line or argue the point that the writer is trying to make.

so if i wanted to write another sentence that follows the first sentence it has to be about video games?

Well, it depends on your theme. Another sentence about video games is fine.
But your theme could be about your family..

My brother and I like to play video games. But my mom says that we should do our homework first and read a story book to our little sister.
