Coffeemakers are cooking appliances used to brew coffee

Coffeemakers are cooking appliances used to brew coffee without having to boil water in a separate container. Wikipedia

I have never made coffee myself; always have it in some restaurant because here tea is much more prevalent and common. I was wondering what would happen if you drop mix coffee directly with water and heat the mixture up as is done in case of tea. "brew" - I think the 'brew' here means differently from what it does for winemaking. Right?

Please guide me.
