'code-date' or 'code-date' as a verb

In the supermarket industry, designated employees will apply code dates to perishable items (milk, cheese, etc.) to alert consumers that products are nearing their sell-by dates. How would we write 'code dated' as verbs in the following. Should we include a hyphen in both examples?

1. Items were not code-dated in the dairy cooler.

2. Please ensure to code-date the milk and cheese sections in the dairy aisle.

Thank you.
