Vocabulary

Coat, jacket, etc.

Hello,

Could you please say how to top part of the suit of the following

gentleman is called?

My dictionary suggests that it is called either a coat or a jacket,

but aren't these terms relate to the following clothes?

Jacket Coat

Thanks in advance.

The gentleman is wearing a (suit) jacket. Sometimes men wear jackets that are similar to the one in the picture but they aren't part of a suit, these are called blazers. If you said he is wearing a suit people know that he has a jacket and matching trousers on.

Blazers in my book generally sport an ersatz coat-of-arms or other logo of affiliation; I'd call it a sports jacket if it was not a suit jacket.

Blazers to me either are the jacket that school kids wear as part of uniform or (normally blue) are non matching jackets with or without emblems, but the buttons are normally gold in colour. Obviously this is a regional difference.

I suggest you stick to jacket or suit jacket Victor to be safe.

Hi,

Broadly speaking, I'd just say that 'coat' and 'jacket' are used pretty loosely, at least where I live.

( But if it's long, I wouldn't say 'jacket'. )
