I read a sentence as follows: The discovery of the mamal bones could provide important clues for determining how and when mammals colonized the islands.
Is "clues for determining" acceptable or total wrong? I refer to the Longman dictionary. It provides only three idioms: clue to/about/as to.
BTW, can I change above example to: The discovery ...could provide important clues to determine how and when mammals colonized the islands.
By using the infinitive, I want to use the idiom "provide X to do Y".
