'closing the door using a key' definition for 'locking'

Hi teachers,
Would, 'closing the door using a key' be an appropriate definition for 'locking' in the following sentence?
Now it's almost eleven o'clock. He is locking the front door.

Thanks in advance.

I have no intention to substitute that phrase for the original 'locking' at all. It is just to explain the meaning to the students. That phrase would be much more easier (for?/to?) the students than 'fasten the door' which I found in some dictionaries. I just have to be sure that I'm not teaching something which is odd, not logical or very unnatural.

I wouldn't say that, because then how will you teach the simple acts of opening the door and closing the door . Have you considered simply miming closing a door and then locking it by turning the key? Or better yet, going to your classroom door and using that a teaching tool?

No. The door might already be closed, and many doors are locked by turning a latch that needs no key. Also, to close a door simply means to move it until there is no opening, a

'Fasten the door' does not necessarily mean locking it. It is more like closing securely.
If you want to teach "lock", use other objects that are commonly secured: your bicycle, your car, the garden gate, etc.

That is not natural English. Perhaps a description of the actions would do:

He closes the front door, puts the key in the lock, turns the key, takes the key out, and checks that he cannot open the door.
