Closing or close quotation mark?

Hi teachers,

"Very well!" said May.

When you're saying the whole sentence, do you say:

Open quotation mark, very well, exclamation mark, close quotation mark, said, May, period

Thanks

No. The punctuation is usually treated simply as a guide to how we should say this. Say very well loudly and emphatically.
